W. S. Lonnie Awards
The Annual W.S Lonnie Awards recognises excellence in annual reporting. The inaugural award for excellence in Occupational Safety, Health and Injury Management reporting for 2007-08 was awarded to Main Roads Western Australia.
Main Roads not only met all the annual reporting requirements for occupational safety and health (OSH), and injury management (IM) but exceeded them.
About the Winner
The assessing panel determined that in its statement of commitment to OSH, Main Roads clearly spelt out its emphasis on a high standard of workplace safety.
Main Roads OSH management system was recertified to AS/NZS 4801 for a further three years and the agency has been recommended for a WorkSafe Gold Certificate.
Several Directorates have also achieved Silver or Gold level WorkSafe Plan certificates which recognise Main Roads’ commitment to achieve excellence in safety and to continuously improve systems and processes.
Other safety initiatives and achievements reported included:
-
Continued implementation and improvement of the OSH Management System.
-
Adoption of “Think Safe – Work Safe – Home Safe” as a safety slogan. The slogan was selected following a staff competition.
-
Following on earlier OSH awareness sessions for executives and senior managers, in 2007-2008 similar OSH training was delivered to middle and line managers. An agency specific one day course was developed and delivered to 300 employees throughout the State.
-
An OSH Champions conference was held with a focus on OSH culture and inspirational OSH leadership. This was attended by around 100 employees.
Main Roads introduced more positive performance indicators including measures for hazard and incident closeout, attendance at toolbox and OSH committee meetings, and percentage of employees receiving an OSH induction on day one. This initiative has led to a decrease in minor incidents, near hit incidents and hazards.
Main Roads also reinstated an OSH reward and recognition program to help encourage safety champions and promote leadership at all levels of the organisation.
